About Q Bert
Q Bert brings Gottlieb’s classic arcade formula to the NES in a compact, challenging action-puzzle game. Each stage centers on a pyramid of colorful cubes, and the goal is to guide Q*bert across their sloping surfaces, changing the cubes to the required color as he goes. A simple jump can quickly become a dangerous misstep, since there is no conventional walk around the pyramid; every move has to be planned with the available platforms and escape discs in mind.
The pyramid is never quiet for long. Enemies drop in from above or appear on the sides, forcing Q*bert to keep moving while he works through the pattern. Coily is the most persistent threat, while other familiar hazards such as Ugg, Wrong-Way, and the mischievous Slick and Sam make certain routes especially risky. Falling off the pyramid costs a life, although landing on a flying disc can provide a useful way back to the top. Bonus stages add a change of pace, asking for quick movement and careful timing rather than cube-by-cube progress.
This 1989 NES release preserves the instantly recognizable isometric layout and pick-up-and-play design that made Q*bert an arcade favorite, while offering a selection of stages that steadily test reflexes and route planning. The controls are easy to understand, but completing later patterns takes concentration, memorization, and a willingness to try again after a single bad jump. Two players can take turns competing for the best performance, making it a natural choice for short sessions with a friend.
For NES owners, Q Bert is an appealing blend of arcade action and puzzle strategy, with colorful visuals, distinctive enemies, and a difficulty curve that rewards patience. You can play online on your browser through RetroCloud and revisit this unusual arcade classic without needing to set up the original hardware.
