About Qix

Qix is a deceptively simple arcade puzzle game that turns an empty playfield into a tense exercise in timing and risk. On the NES version, you guide a small marker around the edge of a rectangular field, then cut across open space to enclose sections of it. Once a shape is completed, that area is filled in, leaving less room for the Qix, the restless geometric object moving through the unclaimed space.

The objective is to claim enough of the screen to clear each stage, but drawing a line is never entirely safe. The Qix can interfere with your progress, and Sparx hazards patrol the borders, making it dangerous to linger or take an awkward route. You can move quickly around territory that has already been captured, while crossing open space demands more care. A short, efficient cut may secure a useful portion of the field, but a longer line can produce a much larger gain if you can finish it without being caught.

Released for the NES in 1991, this version brings Taito’s abstract arcade concept to a home console with straightforward controls and a focus on repeat attempts rather than elaborate presentation. There is no story to distract from the central challenge: judge the movement of the hazards, choose when to commit, and steadily reduce the open area. The two-player option adds a competitive or shared element, with players taking turns testing their nerve and accuracy.

Qix is a good fit for short sessions, yet its simple rules have surprising depth. Each completed section feels satisfying, while every new attempt encourages a slightly bolder strategy. Whether you want to revisit a distinctive Taito classic or play online on your browser, RetroCloud offers a convenient way to experience this unusual NES puzzle game.
