About Platoon

Platoon is a demanding NES action game based on Oliver Stone’s 1986 war film, released in 1988 by Ocean and published by Sunsoft. Rather than presenting a straightforward run-and-gun experience from start to finish, it shifts between several styles of play as you guide a soldier through the dangers of the Vietnam War.

Much of the game uses a side-scrolling perspective. You move through dense jungle terrain, climb and descend around obstacles, and fight enemy soldiers with your rifle and grenades. The limited view makes careful movement important, since opponents and hazards can appear with little warning. Other sections change the pace with overhead exploration, including dark areas where finding the correct route is as important as surviving enemy fire. The changing viewpoints give Platoon more variety than many licensed action games of its era, although they can also make the controls and objectives feel unforgiving at first.

The atmosphere is one of the game’s strongest features. Thick vegetation, hostile ambushes, nighttime scenes, and dangerous terrain create a tense sense of uncertainty rather than the power fantasy found in some military shooters. Ammunition and health must be treated carefully, and rushing forward often leads to avoidable damage. Players who take time to learn enemy patterns and the layout of each section will have a much better chance of making progress.

Platoon is not an easy NES adventure, but its mixture of side-scrolling combat and overhead navigation makes it a distinctive licensed title. It is especially appealing to players interested in unusual 8-bit adaptations and games that reward persistence over reflexes alone.
