About Startropics

StarTropics is a distinctive action-adventure game for the NES, released by Nintendo in 1990. You play as Mike Jones, a teenager who travels to a remote island in the South Pacific to visit his uncle, only to discover that he has disappeared. What begins as a search through a colorful tropical community soon leads into a larger mystery involving hidden ruins, dangerous creatures, and secrets scattered across the islands.

The game combines overhead exploration with real-time combat. Mike can talk with villagers, search buildings, collect useful items, and explore caves and other enclosed areas where the action shifts to a more focused, room-by-room format. Battles require movement and timing rather than menu commands, with weapons such as Mike’s signature yo-yo giving the game a playful identity while still demanding careful positioning. Puzzles, switches, traps, and hidden paths add variety to the dungeon sections, and the difficulty can be surprisingly demanding in places.

StarTropics has a lighter, more relaxed atmosphere than many fantasy adventures, thanks to its beaches, village settings, and unusual sense of humor, but it is still a substantial quest with plenty of exploration and combat. Its combination of traditional adventure structure and modern-for-its-time presentation makes it an appealing choice for NES fans who enjoy games with personality and a slightly unconventional setting.

Whether you remember discovering it on the original Nintendo console or want to experience it for the first time, RetroCloud lets you play online on your browser. With its memorable island backdrop, inventive dungeon design, and straightforward but satisfying action, StarTropics remains one of the more interesting adventure games in the NES library.
